5 Beautiful & Simple Piano Pieces to Impress

Updated: Nov 16

Whether you are just starting to play or already an advanced player, here are some simple and beautiful pieces you can learn to impress your friends and family.

  1. Satie - Gymnopédie No. 1

Satie's Gymnopedie No.1 is a classical piece written in 1888, well-known for its simple yet beautiful melody. It is perfect for those who are beginners and also those who are returning to play the instrument. It is a relaxing and tranquil composition, though repetitive, one can't get enough of the soothing melody.

2. "Plastic Bag Theme" From American Beauty

The theme song of the movie 'American Beauty' was composed by Thomas Newman. Similar to Satie's Gymnopedie piece, it exudes a beautiful melody that is simple to play. It captures a moment of tranquility and melancholy perfectly. A slow and simple piece yet packed with emotion, Newman's 'Plastic Bag Theme' is sure to turn heads - or rather - ears.

3. Yiruma - River Flows In You

A rather bittersweet piece, Yiruma's River Flow In You is a staple piece to learn in a beginner's repertoire. The main melodic line is catchy to the ears, and memorable to the heart. Though it is structured more like a pop song than a classical piano composition, ‘River Flows in You’ is hugely popular among both pop and classical listeners.

4. Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche

The beauty of Einaudi's compositions lies in its simplicity. 'Nuvole Bianche' in English, means 'White Clouds' which fits Ludovico's composition perfectly as it captures tranquility, calmness and ambience. It creates a canvas for the listener to be lost in his/her thoughts, especially in troubled times.

5. Beethoven - Ode to Joy

Probably the most popular piece on this list, Beethoven's Ode to Joy is a piece meant for celebratory times. Especially on festivals like Christmas, when the atmosphere is filled with love and warmth, Ode to Joy is the perfect composition to be played as people come together to bond.

Zoe is an avid fan of all kinds of music. Her primary instrument is the guitar but she is always passionately learning how to play other instruments such as the drums and keyboard. She is currently playing the bass guitar in a band and has been routinely involved in music since she was a child.
